Biographie
Né en Sučde en 1961, Michael Rehnvall passe
son enfance ā Österbybruk. Au cours de ses études en psychologie, en
pédagogie et en soins éducatifs pour l’enfance et la jeunesse au
lycée Katedralskolan d’Uppsala, on remarque trčs tôt son vif intéręt
pour l’ętre humain et les conditions de son existence. Dčs 1979, il
entre dans l’équipe du département de chirurgie ā l’hôpital de
Falun, en Dalécarlie. Son souci pour les questions d’ordre
existentiel s’approfondit et s’oriente tant vers le domaine médical
que vers la psychologie. Il suit également une formation de peinture
ā l’huile pendant deux ans et produit une série de tableaux pour
l’Hôpital de Falun.
Mais la capitale l’appelle ā elle, il subit son attraction
culturelle, et c’est ainsi qu’en 1982 il arrive ā Stockholm. Inspiré
par les conditions favorables de son travail dans une école
maternelle, il invite les enfants ā participer ā une suite
d’expérimentations artistiques. Son temps libre est alors trčs
largement consacré au dessin, ā la peinture, mais aussi ā l’écriture
de divers textes en prose, activités auxquelles il s’adonne avec
ferveur. Aprčs un entretien avec un responsable de la maison
d’édition Albert Bonnier, on l’encourage vivement afin qu’il termine
son premier recueil de počmes.
Au printemps 1987, il s’installe ā Paris. Il étudie la linguistique,
la culture et la littérature franįaises ā l’Université de la
Sorbonne. Il reįoit deux diplômes et obtient sa Licence en Lettres
Modernes en 1995. Ses études lui permettent d’examiner davantage
encore l’ętre humain, toujours objet de sa curiosité, cette fois-ci
avec un accent mis sur le plan socioculturel. C’est alors qu’il
reprend ses écrits et s’adonne ā la littérature pendant quelques
années : quatre œuvres romanesques voient ainsi le jour. Son
potentiel artistique s’intensifie. La rencontre avec Béatrice Level
devient cruciale car c’est elle qui lui propose des cours privés
d’arts plastiques. Ayant remarqué son talent, elle l’encourage
fortement ā se consacrer entičrement ā la peinture.
Michael Rehnvall travaille aujourd’hui principalement ā Paris. Il
possčde également un atelier ā Bergslagen, en Sučde, oų il passe la
plupart de son temps estival.
“The Nordic light est aujourd’hui une notion mondialement connue
et reconnue. Il s’agit d’ une lumičre qui suscite une singuličre
attirance et qui est porteuse d’une intimité tout ā fait
exceptionnelle ā travers laquelle je trouve aussi bien un
ravissement qui confine ā l’extase qu’une intense puissance
créatrice”, dit Michael Rehnvall.
Aprčs avoir vécu plus de vingt ans en France, il est ā présent un
cosmopolite accompli. Et c’est aussi ā travers ses nombreux voyages
– Japon, Antilles, Thaīlande, Chine, Etats-Unis, Inde, Afrique,
Tahiti, Argentine... etc. – qu’il lui semble mieux comprendre les
liens souterrains qui unissent non seulement les hommes des
différentes contrées, mais aussi leurs langues et leurs cultures.
L’un des traits les plus significatifs de son œuvre est
l’interaction entre deux genres d’art. A travers les mots qui
composent ses textes, nous discernons un langage riche en images, et
simultanément sa peinture abstraite est communicative, fortement
marquée par l’écrit. Ecoutons maintenant Michael Rehnvall décrire
son art:
“J’aspire ā trouver un mode d’expression qui soit universel et
qui puisse transcender les frontičres. Je veux montrer l’âme humaine
dépouillée afin qu’elle laisse rayonner sa force incontestable.”
Michael Rehnvall was born in Sweden in 1961
and spent the first seventeen years of his life in Österbybruk.
While in upper secondary school studying child welfare, psychology
and pedagogy at Katedralskolan in Uppsala his strong interest in the
human being and the conditions of their existence were quickly
noticed. In 1979 he joined the surgical department team at the
Hospital of Falun. His interest in the more existential questions
increased and he began to orientate himself in a medical as well as
a psychological direction. Also, during two years, he followed an
oil painting course and produced a series of paintings for the
Hospital of Falun.
But the big city was enticing him with its rich cultural life, so in
1982 Michael Rehnvall arrived in Stockholm. Inspired by the
favourable conditions in the nursery school where he worked he
carried out a series of artistic experimentations with the children.
His free time was very much devoted to drawing and painting, but
also to the writing of various texts, activities in which he applied
himself with fervour. During a meeting with the publishing house
Albert Bonnier in Stockholm, he was strongly encouraged to complete
his first collection of poems.
In the springtime of 1987 he moved to Paris where he studied The
Science of language, French culture and literature at the University
of the Sorbonne. Here he received two diplomas and his “Licence en
lettres modernes” (Bachelor of Arts in Science and French literature)
in 1995. His studies gave him further possibilities to analyse the
human being, still an object of his curiosity, this time more
orientated towards a socio-cultural direction. He resumed his
writings and completed four literary works. His artistic potential
intensifies. Meeting Béatrice Level was of a crucial importance to
his future, and after having noticed his talent she give him private
fine art lessons and encouraged him to totally devote his time to
painting.
Michael Rehnvall mainly works in Paris, but he also has a studio in
Bergslagen, Sweden, where he spends many of his summers.
“The Nordic Light is today a notion known throughout the world.
It is a light which produces a singular attraction and which carries
an exceptional intimacy through which I find both rapture and
creative force,” says Michael Rehnvall.
After having now spent over 20 years in France he has become an
accomplished cosmopolitan and it is also through his numerous
travels – Japan, West Indies, Thailand, China, USA, India, Africa,
Tahiti and Argentina… etc. that he feels he has better understood the
links between human beings and their languages and cultures.
One of his most significant qualities is the intimate interplay
between two forms of art. Through the words his texts are built from,
where we discover a rich language full of images and also through
his paintings, abstract and communicative and strongly marked by
writings.
This is how Michael Rehnvall describes his art:
“I strive to find a form of expression which is universal and can
break frontiers. I want to show the human soul stripped so it can
finally let its incontestable force shine.”
Michael Rehnvall föddes 1961 och tillbringade
sin uppväxt i Österbybruk. Genom sina gymnasiala studier i
ungdomsvård, psykologi och pedagogik vid Katedralskolan i Uppsala
väcks mycket tidigt hans intresse för människan och villkoren för
hennes existens. 1979 får han anställning vid Kirurgiska Kliniken på
Falu Lasarett. Intresset för de mer existentialistiska frågorna
fördjupas och kompletteras ur ett både medicinskt och psykologiskt
perspektiv. Utöver detta genomgår han en 2-årig utbildning i
oljemålning och framställer även ett antal konstverk till Falu
Lasarett.
Men storstaden lockar, inte minst det rika kulturlivet och 1982
beslutar sig Michael för att flytta till Stockholm. Hans arbete vid
barnomsorgen inspirerar honom att tillsammans med barngruppen
genomföra en rad olika experimentella konstprojekt. Utöver detta
tecknar och målar han på sin fritid samt skriver prosa. Efter ett
besök hos en förläggare på Albert Bonniers förlag uppmuntras han att
fullfölja sin diktsamling.
Under våren 1987 bosätter han sig i Paris. Studerar språkvetenskap,
kultur och litteratur vid l’Université de la Sorbonne. Tilldelas två
diplom och erhåller sin ”Licence en Lettres Modernes” (Fil. kand)
1995. Han studier ger honom ytterligare möjligheter att analysera
människan, den här gången med tonvikten lagd på ett sociokulturellt
plan. Han återupptar skrivandet och fullbordar fyra skönlitterära
verk. Men hans konstnärliga potential intensifieras. Mötet med
konstnärinnan Béatrice Level blir avgörande. Det är hon som ger
honom privatlektioner, ser hans begåvning och uppmuntrar honom att
ägna sig åt konstnärsyrket på heltid.
Michael Rehnvall verkar idag främst i Paris men har även en egen
ateljé i Bergslagen där han tillbringar större delen av sommaren.
”The Nordic light är idag ett internationellt etablerat begrepp.
Ett ljus som bär på en alldeles speciell lockelse och närhet ur
vilket jag finner både hänförelse och skaparkraft,” säger
Michael Rehnvall.
Efter att idag ha tillbringat över 20 år i Frankrike är han en
utpräglad kosmopolit. Och det är också genom sina otaliga resor –
till bla. Japan, Västindien, Thailand, Kina, USA, Indien, Afrika,
Tahiti och Argentina… etc. som han tycker sig förstå sammanhangen, inte
bara mellan oss människor utan också mellan våra språk och kulturer.
Ett av hans mest utmärkande drag är det nära samspelet mellan två
konstarter. Ur orden skönjer vi hans tydliga bildspråk samtidigt som
hans abstrakta måleri är kommunikativt och starkt präglat av
berättelsen. Eller som Michael Rehnvall själv beskriver sin konst:
”Jag strävar efter ett uttryckssätt som är gränsöverskridande och
universellt. Att skildra den avklädda människosjälen och dess
otvivelaktiga styrka.”
